Stories of Uki and the South Arm

Peate’s Store

John

Peate owned the first store in Uki. On 13th December 1905, John Peate bought land at the old Butter Factory site, erected a tent and sold homemade lollies until their shop was built.

People were unkind to Mrs Peate, as she was from the Sikh community.

John Peate was formerly a Scottish Barrister, and his wife Shah and her sister Sue who accompanied him were of Indian birth and were very gentle people.

Their shop sold confectionery, homemade drinks and journals. They sold sweets such as aniseed balls, humbugs, lollies, and coconut ice.

Their new store was situated on the site of the now “Holy Trinity” Church. The shop was later destroyed by fire around 1915.
